Rules Blackpool Short Mat Bowls League
Any Rule not mentioned is as per the ESMBA Website.
The league match is played by two teams of 4 pairs per side.
Any player who plays for a team in any given week, cannot play for another team in the same week.
There are 4 games played in a pairs format.
There are 2 points per game ( drawn games count as 1 point each ) and 2 points for the aggregate points total winner ( 1 point each if aggregate points tie ) and a bonus point if the away team win the aggregate.
So if there is a Home aggregate win there are 10 points to be won ( so 8-2, 6-4 , etc) and if it is an away win on aggregate total there are 11 points in match ( so 2-9 or 4-7 , etc ).
The home captain to nominate their pair, which is matched up by the opposing captain.
In the event of a team not having enough players, then the other captain will pick players who have already played to play again. If a team only has 7 players the opposing captain picks one player who has already played to play again.
If a team only has 6 players the opposing captain picks two players to play again, but they start the game with a -2 penalty.
Woods are delivered alternately by each team with each team member delivering all of their woods before the next team member takes their turn.
Players cannot change their woods after they bowl the first wood, although the order in which the pair's bowl can change at any end.
Each player will bowl 2 woods per end.
The game is played over 10 ends (played up and down the mat).
The away team bowl first in the first end and then each subsequent end is started by the winner of the previous end.
All playes, both home and away, are allowed a roll up both ways on the mat, prior to them starting their game. This does not apply to Team Knockout -- where no players should get a practice before a game.
The team who bowls first in an end also decides where on the centre line at the head end the jack is placed.
When delivering a bowl a player must have one foot entirely within, or above, the bounds of the delivery foot mat and the other foot within the side delivery lines.
If this is not done then a foot fault occurs and the bowl is removed from the playing area.
Similarly, any bowl which touches the centre block, fails to cross the far dead line or crosses the ditch line without first touching the jack is dead and is removed from the playing area.
Any bowl leaving the side of the mat is dead.
Any bowl which crosses the nearest dead bowl line to the bowler is in play - this counts if the ball is dropped or carried past the dead bowl line by the current bowler. If the ball does not pass the nearest dead bowl line to the bowler it can be retrieved and bowled again. This means that any bowl carried past the nearest dead bowl line to the bowler is dead.
The last player on an end does not need to play their wood but can declare they are to carry their wood, once declared, their wood is dead and cannot be played on that end.
If the jack is driven off the mat the end is declared dead and the end is replayed. There is currently no maximum number of times this can occur in the Blackpool Short Mat League.
If a wood is played which touches the jack (and the jack is still live ) before the wood comes to rest it is declared a ‘toucher’ and is marked with chalk (for the avoidance of doubt, the wood does not need to hit the jack directly, it can hit other woods on the way down, it must however touch the live jack before coming to rest to be a 'toucher').
Balls that have been previously been played and have come to rest and are 'knocked up' and subsequently touch the live jack are not to be classed as touchers.
A toucher or the jack remains in play when it crosses the ditch line (non toucher woods doing so are removed).
If a toucher or the jack is completely over the ditch line then it can only be moved by another toucher or the jack.
A toucher or jack which has completely crossed the ditch line has its position marked by chalk marks on the mat so that it can be returned to its position if it is illegally moved by a non toucher wood.
A toucher or the jack lying across the ditch line is still ‘live’ and can be moved by any wood or 'touched' if it is the jack
At the conclusion of an end each of a team’s woods which are nearer to the jack than any of the opponents’ woods counts as a ‘shot’.
Measuring devices may be utilised in determining shots.
LIVE END NO SCORE
When at the conclusion of an end the nearest bowls of each side are touching the jack or the two nearest bowls are of an equal distance from the jack or there are no bowls in the live area or touchers in the ditch, it shall be deemed to be a live end and NO SCORE. The end shall be recorded as an end played with NO score, The player who played first in that tied end shall again play first on the next end in the opposite direction. The end is not be replayed.
FOLLOWING THE BOWL UP THE RINK MAT
No player shall follow their bowl up to the head on the rink mat or leave the rink mat and follow it up the side.
Any player who infringes this rule must be warned as soon as they cross the nearest dead line to the bowler and on the second offence the opposing Skip can have the bowl stopped and removed from the rink mat or have the end played again, but it must be from the same direction
TEAM KNOCKOUT SPECIAL RULES
The winner of each match is to be decided on the Total Aggregate Points ONLY.
Match points do not count, only Total Aggregate Points.
Any team drawn at home in the Final starts off -2 per game, so -8 in total aggregate.
This applies to all teams when the gane is not being played on 2 leg format ( usually just the Final ).
If there is a draw on Total Aggregate Points after the last end of the last game of a Knockout match, the last end is replayed until there is a winning team.
ONLY the last end is to be replayed in the event of a draw on Total Aggregate Points at the end of the whole Team KO Match - with the same players who played the last end of the last game.
